I somehow roused myself to go out and shoot sunrise Central Park Bow Bridge (no easy feat for someone who is NOT a morning person).

Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Faux, both prominent Landscape Architects of their time, Central Park opened in 1858. One of the most visited features is the Bow Bridge, so named due to the resemblance of the bow of an archer or violinist. Offering expansive views of the lake, the intent was for it to stand out against the surroundings and it does, indeed, stand out in the fall foliage lining the shore.

How to capture one of the most iconic landmarks amidst the gorgeous Autumn foliage without a crowd of people in a park that attracts nearly 42 million visitors each year? Visit at sunrise. I am not a morning person. At all. But the only way to photograph the the Bow Bridge without a crowd of people means an early wakeup call.

I headed out in the predawn darkness with the idea of photographing as many areas as possible in the short time around sunrise when the morning light is so gorgeous.

Just a few early risers were there, and the trees were in full color. The sunrise light was perfect! I could smell the Autumn scents of leaves and fresh air and I was filled with anticipation as I headed towards the bridge, searching for a memorable shot.

As I was testing out different views, I realized with dread that the park was filling up quickly with joggers, dog walkers, and others out to see the colors. I quickly set up my gear and started shooting. No more strolling! I was jogging from spot to spot around the bridge, wanting to be sure and get the shot while conditions were so perfect.

As I returned to my hotel (too late for breakfast, unfortunately), I quickly uploaded the photos to my laptop, anxious to see what I’d captured. And I wasn’t disappointed. I knew immediately that I’d experienced something special at a time of day when I’m usually snug in bed. The early wake up was worth it.

This print rapidly became a favorite of mine that makes me smile each time I look at it. I hope you like it as well.
