Skogafoss the magnificent - perfect gift for anyone who loves Iceland and it's waterfalls!
This trip to Iceland was 4 years in the planning and was going to be awesome! This is Skógafoss and it is one of the most iconic and well-known waterfalls in Iceland. With its impressive height of approximately 60 meters (197 feet) and a width of about 25 meters (82 feet) the waterfall's immense power and the thundering sound of the water as it crashes into the pool below are awe-inspiring.
For Iceland, it was a great day, a little windy and cool but at least it wasn't raining - not at that minute anyway. Blowing spray from the waterfall and camera gear is not a great combination. A little mist is one thing but a soaking deluge is something else entirely. I did go close to the base of the falls and it was humbling; making one feel very small and insignificant, and wet!
After scouting around a bit it was clear to me that the most striking image would be from mid-stream. Naturally! Luckily I had my waterproof Neos boots handy, so I waded in. I managed to stay in the areas that were only 12-14 inches deep and somehow managed to negotiate the slippery and loose rocks of the riverbed. Balancing myself and my tripod precariously in the middle of the stream, I began to compose what I hoped would be a special photograph. My long raincoat flapped around out behind me in the wind like some crazed cape and the occasional slip on the rocks made for several rapid-heart-beat moments!
The clouds moved over the horizon casting interesting shadows on the cliff walls and the waterfall itself. This mid-stream angle was perfect. As I stood there totally mesmerized by the power of the water the sun hit the waterfall and we were rewarded with this rainbow right across the face of the falls. It only lasted for about 20 seconds. How cool is that! Now to just make back to the river's edge without my camera gear taking a dunking!
Back in my room, as I reviewed my photographs, I felt a real sense of accomplishment. I think I managed to capture something that felt uniquely mine. The images spoke of my passion and my dedication to creating art that brings the beauty of our world into people's homes. Enjoy!
